Robbie Barnett, director of Modern Tibetan Studies at Columbia University, says the meeting is more significant than previous presidential meetings with the Dalai Lama because it came amid increased Chinese rhetoric.

In October, three people died during a "spiritual warrior" retreat when they were overcome during a sweat lodge ceremony. Ray's attorney calls the deaths a terrible accident, not a criminal act, and says Ray will be exonerated.
