Campaign Hotline, Sorry Wrong Number

Oct 29th, 2008 · The Democratic Party of Michigan passed out a flier with two applications for absentee ballots. It was an effort to get people to vote early. The flier included a photo of Barack Obama, another photo of Senator Carl Levin and a number for a Democratic campaign hotline. Unfortunately for Democrats, the number was really hot. The party mistakenly gave the number for a phone sex line.

Christopher Buckey Leaves 'National Review'

The author: Christopher Buckley. After posting his endorsement, the backlash made it clear he had to give up his column at the magazine his late father, William F. Buckley, Jr., founded more than 50 years ago. In Christopher Buckley's words, he's been "fatwahed" by the conservative movement.

Sep 22nd, 2008 · New York City said goodbye to Yankee Stadium Sunday. New York beat Baltimore 7-3, but they missed the playoffs. So they go directly to New York's traditional postseason recriminations. The Yankees are replacing the stadium where Babe Ruth hit home runs, and Lou Gehrig said goodbye. The stadium's epitaph comes form Yogi Berra, the Yankee who famously said, "It ain't over til it's over." Berra says, "I'm sorry to see it over."

Chef Apologizes After Recommending Toxic Greens

Aug 7th, 2008 · Celebrity chef Anthony Worrall Thompson says he's sorry he recommended a salad ingredient that could kill someone. He told a magazine that tasty salads can include a plant called "henbane." But "henbane" means "killer of hens," and it's deadly in large doses. Small amounts cause hallucinations. The chef says he meant to name a different, harmless weed called "fat hen."

Nothing Says 'Sorry' Like 23-Cent Pizzas

May 5th, 2008 · A pizza chain is apologizing for calling LeBron James a crybaby — in print. The Cleveland Cavaliers star complained about the officiating during the basketball playoffs. A player for the opposing Washington Wizards called him a "crybaby." Then the pizza chain Papa John's made T-shirts with that word and James' number — 23. To help make up for the verbal foul, Papa John's will sell Cleveland residents large pizzas on Thursday for twenty-three cents.

Sorry, Wrong Number

Jan 23rd, 2008 · A Maryland man who wanted to give an opinion about mortgage foreclosures looked up the governor's office in the phone book. The person who answered his call said, "Hi, sexy." The phone-book number was a misprint, connecting to an X-rated service. The mistake had gone undetected for two years.

The IRS May Say Sorry

Jan 11th, 2008 · National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson, an independent voice at the IRS, suggests in her annual report to Congress that the agency should issue apology payments. The payments would only be issued when the agency excessively burdens or harms taxpayers.
