He stands accused of a calculated armed robbery in the United States, and could face life in prison if he's extradited and convicted. But Sommer claims his motive was political, and that he has evidence of war crimes from his time in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Dec 5th, 2006 · Mexican police arrest the most well-known leader of left-wing activists who have staged six months of protests in Oaxaca. Flavio Sosa was seized after he held a news conference in Mexico City. Police said he was wanted for his involvement in kidnapping, violent robbery and arson.
Jan 11th, 2006 · The Turkish man who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981 is set to be released from prison in Istanbul Thursday. Mehmet Ali Agca served 19 years of a life sentence in Italy before being pardoned at the pontiff's behest in 2000. He was serving a separate sentence in Turkey for robbery and murder.
Nov 18th, 2005 · Prison reform activist David Ruiz died recently at age 63. Ben Philpott of member station KUT in Austin, Texas, has a remembrance of Ruiz, who went to prison multiple times for aggravated robbery but spent his years in prison educating himself and advocating prison reform.
Nov 2nd, 2005 · Ed Gordon talks with Mark Simon and Herrman Atkins about After Innocence, which follows eight men wrongfully imprisoned until DNA evidence helped overturn their convictions. Writer-producer Simon featured Atkins, who was freed after serving 13 years on a wrongful conviction that included rape and robbery.
