Oct 7th, 2008 · Barack Obama has lost the election in Brazil. That country has a law that says candidates can list any name they want on the ballot. This year, at least eight people ran as Barack Obama. One wanted to be mayor of a small town outside Rio de Janeiro. He says the Obama name helped open doors for him. But according to official election records, that Barack Obama did not score a single vote. No word on whether the ballot included any John McCains.
Feb 15th, 2008 · Hillary Clinton is pinning her presidential hopes on a strong showing next month in Ohio and Texas. She may have no better stronghold in either state than among Hispanics in the borderlands of the Rio Grande Valley.
Nov 23rd, 2007 · The tiny village of Boquillas, Mexico, used to rely on visitors who hiked across the Rio Grande from Big Bend National Park to drink warm cerveza and buy trinkets. But since the U.S. closed all "informal" border crossings, Boquillas began to wither and die.
Jul 28th, 2007 · Verge, a new record label, devotes its first release to a sampling of contemporary funk, jazz and hip hop sounds emanating from the slums of Rio de Janeiro. The socially conscious label returns some of the profits back to the struggling neighborhoods.
Jul 7th, 2007 · Al Gore's seven-continent concert series Live Earth debuts, featuring a host of musical acts, from Rio, Tokyo and Johannesburg to the Meadowlands of New Jersey. Gore hopes the spectacle will draw attention to global warming.
Jul 1st, 2007 · The monument that is synonymous with the city of Rio de Janeiro is vying to be chosen one of the new Wonders of the World in a Web contest. The city's towering Christ the Redeemer statue is competing with the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower and Machu Picchu for the honor.
Apr 16th, 2007 · Thousands of Chicago residents are celebrating their city's choice as the American nominee to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. The U.S. Olympic Committee chose Chicago over Los Angeles Saturday. The city's next task is to beat the likes of Madrid, Prague, Rome, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. Chicago Public Radio's Jay Field reports.
