Dec 28th, 2009 · A 101-year-old woman in Williamstown, Mass., now has one of the famous canes from The Boston Post. The defunct paper sent several hundred gold-tipped canes to New England towns in 1909 as a publicity stunt. Each town gave a cane to its oldest resident. Ten years ago, Hazel Burdick pushed Williamstown officials to find their cane and revive the tradition. They did and now it's hers.
Dec 23rd, 2009 · Subway, the fast-food sandwich company, has earned a reputation for savvy marketing. Now it's taking its publicity machine to a whole new level, literally. It has transformed a shipping container into a Subway shop and has had it hoisted by crane onto the rising skeleton of the Freedom Tower being built in Manhattan at Ground Zero.
Nov 20th, 2009 · Bon Jovi is at the top of the album charts this week, riding an unprecedented publicity push. His record label struck a deal with the conglomerate NBC Universal for an exclusive presence on their many TV networks, including appearances on Today, Inside the Actors Studio and The Tonight Show.
Nov 6th, 2009 · Customers bought more than 3 million bottles of celebrity fragrances from department stores last year. Celebrity scents aren't necessarily best-sellers. They account for just about 10 percent of fragrance sales, but where their value comes is publicity.
Sep 8th, 2009 · Firefighters don't rescue cats out of trees these days. And firefighters on New York's Coney Island didn't like it a bit, when they had to hose down an elephant. The city ordered the firefighters to bathe a circus elephant named Suzie, for a publicity shot. So the firefighters shut down the firehouse for the half hour bath. Luckily, there were no fires.
Jul 1st, 2009 · Hybrid cars have been getting a lot of publicity lately. Now some manufacturers are offering another option: "clean diesel" cars. Some can get 40 or even 50 miles to the gallon; they aren't the noisy, smoke belching and sluggish diesels of years ago.

On Monday, the president met with leaders of the health care industry who pledged to reduce costs. Health care experts are trying to decide whether that deal represents an actual breakthrough — or a publicity stunt.
