Joan Rivers' Cursing Gets Her Kicked Off TV Show

Jun 18th, 2008 · Comedian Joan Rivers was on a British TV talk show when she brought up the actor Russell Crowe, saying "get ready to bleep this" before using two profane words to describe the actor. But nobody was bleeping anything on the live program. Rivers was asked to leave during a commercial break.

New York Cabbie Fined for Cursing

May 15th, 2008 · The days when New York cabbies could curse each other are over. They can still honk, but they cannot — as one taxi driver recently did — unleash a string of profanities on another driver for honking. The loud-mouthed driver was accused of assault — and suspended and fined $1,000 by the taxi commission.

For Students, Nun Recites Unusable Profanities ****

Dec 10th, 2007 · We can't repeat the words that Sister Kathy Avery used in front of her students. She's the principal of a Catholic school in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan. And after a Mass last month, she asked some middle-school-age students to stay. She told the kids she would not tolerate cursing. And right there in church, she then read off a list of words she didn't accept. The Detroit Free Press reports that some parents were shocked, while others approved.

Albert Ellis: Father of Cognitive Therapy ****

His theories on cognitive therapy, first presented in the mid-1950s, challenged the thinking of Sigmund Freud. By the time he died this week at age 93, Ellis had become considered by many to be as influential as Freud.

Decency Standards Hold Despite Profanity *

Under President Bush, the FCC has taken a much harder line on airing profanities -- even unscripted expletives during live broadcasts.

With Biting Humor, Pryor Explored Race in America

Dec 11th, 2005 · Richard Pryor, the iconoclastic, profane and bitingly funny comic whose uninhibited humor explored the African-American experience, died Sunday of a heart attack. The 65-year-old had battled multiple sclerosis for nearly two decades. Pryor produced 20 comedy albums, won five Grammys, and appeared in more than 30 films.
