Over her lifetime she gave away nearly $200 million, most of it to charities and cultural organizations in New York City. In 1998, she received the nation's highest civilian honor a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her life's motto summed up her generosity in nine words: "Money is like manure, it should be spread around."

Dec 10th, 2006 · Ruth Johnson Colvin is one of 10 people who will be honored this coming week with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Colvin dedicated her life to literacy in 1962 when she discovered that more than 11,000 people in her hometown of Syracuse, N.Y., functionally couldn't read. It led her to create Literacy Volunteers or America which today has more than 125 affiliates.
