As a Quaker, Brown did not want to pledge to "support and defend the U.S. and state Constitutions against all enemies." She drew an asterisk next to "defend" and wrote "non-violently."
Mar 17th, 2008 · David Paterson is sworn in as New York's 55th governor, following Eliot Spitzer's resignation over a prostitution scandal. Paterson said he is concerned that the state economy could be headed for a crisis.
Mar 14th, 2008 · Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is resisting calls for his resignation amid allegations that he lied under oath and conspired in a case involving an inappropriate personal relationship. Kilpatrick gave a racially charged speech this week, accusing the local media of having a "lynch mob" mentality.
Feb 28th, 2008 · Congress is asking the Justice Department to investigate whether All-Star pitcher Roger Clemens lied under oath when he testified before a House committee two weeks ago. Clemens denied ever using performance enhancing drugs and said he was never notified that former Senator George Mitchell wanted to meet with him as part of his probe into doping in baseball.
