Sudanese Riots Follow a Leader's Death *

Aug 1st, 2005 · Deadly riots break out in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum after John Garang, longtime leader of Sudan's southern rebels, was confirmed dead in a helicopter crash. Police say at least 24 people were killed Monday. Garang's helicopter went down in bad weather near the southern border with Uganda. He was sworn in as Sudan's vice president just three weeks ago.
