A few Washington officials had a plan to loosen America's strict immigration quotas and allow the Jews to live in Alaska. That proposal never passed Congress. The inaugural concerts this March include a fully staged performance of Alexander Zemlinksy's A Florentine Tragedy. Senator Richard Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, compared a description of mistreatment -- submitted to a Pentagon investigator by an F-B-I agent -- to actions carried out by Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia. Some Republicans accused Durbin of maligning American military personnel.

Mar 8th, 2005 · Hans Bethe, a key figure in designing the atomic bomb, died at home Sunday at 98. Bethe, who left Nazi Germany and joined the Cornell University faculty in 1935, led the Manhattan Project's theoretical physics division. His explanation of how the sun and stars generate energy earned him the Nobel Prize in 1967. Jeremy Bernstein, author of a biography of Bethe, discusses the life of the physicist.
