Dec 10th, 2008 · In New Orleans, December brings only faux snow, so Papa Noel packs his presents on a pirogue pulled by alligators. Feux de Joie bonfires are lit along the Mississippi River to light his way to the bayous. Papa might not have a stereo on board, but if he does, you might hear a few of these Cajun carols around the Crescent City area.

Minnesota Marks 1 Year Since Fatal Bridge Collapse

Aug 1st, 2008 · One year ago Friday in Minnesota's Twin Cities, the Interstate 35 West bridge crumbled into the Mississippi River, killing 13 and injuring 140 people. Accelerated construction of a new bridge is almost complete. Tom Weber reports from Minnesota Public Radio.

In rural Lincoln County, virtually all of the region's primary levees failed, causing the river to reclaim tens of thousands of acres of floodplain. Mississippi River Flood Defense Lacks Funding **

Jun 23rd, 2008 · After the huge floods in 1993, a few Midwestern states got together with the Army Corps of Engineers to draw up a plan to build higher levee walls along the Mississippi River. The plan could have helped limit the amount of flooding the region is now seeing. The final draft of the report was released in February. But it doesn't look like the federal government will fund it. The project ranks low on the Army Corps of Engineers' priority list.

Town Sits High and Dry After Relocation **

Jun 21st, 2008 · The town of Valmeyer, Ill., was destroyed in the 1993 floods. Instead of rebuilding back in the flood plain, locals moved the town to the top of a nearby bluff. Now folks don't have to worry about the rising Mississippi River.
