Merchant, the man who raised the money to get Merchant-Ivory films made, worked with director James Ivory and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala to create gorgeous-looking literary adaptations made on a shoestring. The team's films included A Room With A View, The Remains of the Day and Howard's End.
