Taking 'The Scream' Personally

Aug 23rd, 2004 · Norwegian police continue to track clues as to the whereabouts of "The Scream" and another Edvard Munch masterpiece taken by armed robbers from an Oslo museum Sunday. With the picture missing, we ask people near the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., to give voice to "The Scream" itself and tell us why the subject was screaming.

Grant and novelist Mark Twain were writing two American masterpieces. Perry believes Grant's Personal Memoirs and Twain's Huckleberry Finn reveal a fixation the two men shared: the legacy of the Civil War and slavery. NPR's Robert Siegel talks with Perry.
