Feb 24th, 2005 · When he was a child, music critic Tom Manoff heard the music of Edvard Grieg, particularly his piano concerto in A-minor. This piece of music is known as a workhorse. In pop music, it would be referred to as a "greatest hit." Tom Manoff talks about the status of the warhorse in classical music and we hear Grieg's piano concerto performed here by Leif Ove Andsnes.
Oct 14th, 2004 · NPR's Robert Siegel talks with tenor Ian Bostridge and pianist Leif Ove Andsnes about the song cycle "Winterreise," or Winter's Journey. Bostridge and Andsnes have recorded the set of 24 moody and emotional songs by Franz Schubert on a recent CD on the EMI Classics label. They've also teamed on two other CDs pairing Schubert songs with solo piano sonatas. They're currently on tour, performing Winterreise this Saturday at Carnegie Hall.
