Jun 8th, 2005 · Bolivian President Carlos Mesa has offered to step down after weeks of violent protests by the country's Indian majority, who are demanding nationalization of the oil and gas industries to better share wealth across the nation. Mesa is a U.S.-backed supporter of free markets, and his resignation could result in another Latin American nation shifting towards a leftist government. Madeleine Brand discusses the situation with BBC correspondent Elliott Gotkine, reporting from Bolivia.
May 12th, 2005 · President Bush is to meet with six Latin American leaders. They are trying to win congressional approval for the Central American Free Trade Agreement, which the president signed a year ago. Labor groups oppose the trade deal, and lawmakers have not been eager to embrace it.
