Dec 15th, 2004 · the Salvation Army is struggling to find volunteers to stand in the cold and encourage shoppers to spare a little change. To make up for the dearth of human bell ringers, the charity is installing cardboard cutouts of people called "standees" in select stores. The cut-outs come equipped with cardboard kettles, and, yes, cardboard bells too.
