Dec 15th, 2007 · Rep. Julia Carson (D-Ind.), the first African-American and the first woman to represent Indianapolis, died of lung cancer Saturday. Carson was an outspoken opponent of the war in Iraq. She was also champion of children's issues, women's right, and efforts to reduce homelessness.

Cities ranging from New York to Houston have been providing free housing to the chronically homeless, and are discovering that it actually saves money.
