Jan 16th, 2009 · It was a schoolyard dare immortalized in the movie A Christmas Story: — lick a metal pole in cold weather. The 1983 movie is set in a fictional city based on Hammond, Ind., the hometown of author Jean Shepherd. A 10-year-old boy in Hammond was dared recently — maybe even triple dog dared — to lick a pole. Temperatures were a chilly 10 degrees. The boy's tongue got stuck. By the time the ambulence arrived, the boy had freed himself.
