Sep 30th, 2008 · The Latin phrase caveat emptor means let the buyer beware. In New York movie theaters, the rule is caveat eater. Steve Kaplan was eating popcorn while watching the movie "Superbad." He chewed an unpopped kernel and hurt his tooth. He sued for $1,250 in dental repairs. But a judge says you can't reasonably expect every kernel to pop. So Mr. Kaplan gets nothing. On top of that, he says "Superbad" was really bad.
