Nov 27th, 2007 · The son of socialite and philanthropist Brooke Astor is accused of plundering his mother's estate and trying to get her to change her will. Astor suffered from Alzheimer's disease in the years preceding her death. Her 83-year-old son Anthony Marshall and his former attorney were indicted in New York on Tuesday.

Over her lifetime she gave away nearly $200 million, most of it to charities and cultural organizations in New York City. In 1998, she received the nation's highest civilian honor a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her life's motto summed up her generosity in nine words: "Money is like manure, it should be spread around."
