Sep 23rd, 2008 · A symphonic driving experience ends Tuesday in Lancaster, California. Grooves carved into a quarter-mile stretch of road play the "William Tell Overture" when cars drive over them. It was part of an ad campaign by Honda, which designed the road. A Honda Civic going 55 mph plays the music at perfect pitch. Neighbors were not amused. They said it kept them up at night. City officials plan to pave over the road.

Nov 20th, 2007 · The mayor of Los Angeles wants 1 million trees planted across the asphalt-layered landscape of the city. So far more than 100,000 trees have been planted via the program launched more than a year ago. Half of the more than 100,000 trees were given away at street fairs and tree adoption events where people signed pledge cards promising to care for the trees.
Sep 19th, 2007 · The campaign for parking on commercial lots has spilled into advertising. The asphalt is painted with stripes that say "Parking for Desperate Housewives." But apparently some people have complained. Not everyone likes being called "desperate" -- even if it's just for parking.
May 28th, 2007 · Listener Andy Aaron presents a 1982 recording from under the Brooklyn Bridge. This SoundClip is from the days when the bridge had a metal roadway and sounded like buzzing bees. A later recording shows has the asphalt roadway doesn't sound as cool.
Feb 2nd, 2006 · For the past several years, William Blair, an asphalt contractor in Suffolk, Va., has been anonymously paying the tab for a group of former World War II prisoners of war who meet at a local restaurant each month. A waitress revealed Blair's identity and now he's met the veterans. Blair talks to Robert Siegel about his act of generosity.
