Jun 28th, 2008 · The Mattachine Society was one of the first gay rights groups in the country. On April 21, 1966 they staged a "Sip-In": they went into a tavern, declared that they were gay, ordered a drink — and waited to be served, or turned away, in order to sue.

Sep 4th, 2007 · Alfred Peet, considered by many the "grandfather of specialty coffee," died last week at age 87. He started his own coffee business, Peet's Coffee, in Berkeley, Calif., in 1966. Peet mentored many gourmet coffee brewers since then, including the founders of Starbucks. The author of Uncommon Grounds: The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World offers a remembrance.
